Embracing, Nurturing, and Educating ALL God's Children
Welcome to our Junior High Science page! Be prepared to learn a whole lot of cool scientific experiments that may even look like magic.
The 8th graders performed The Marshmallow Challenge, which is an extraordinarily fun and educational project that introduces engineering and encourages teams to practice simple but reflective lessons in collaboration, innovation and creativity.
The task was simple: in eighteen minutes teams had to build the tallest, free-standing structure utilizing only 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow must end up on top.
Students were able to understand the difficulties that engineers deal with on a daily basis. They began to understand that although these were just some household items; in reality these are some objects that engineers begin with.
As a science teacher, I enjoyed watching students compose different strategies of how they could construct the tallest tower.
I may have even witnessed a future engineer at hand.
