Saint Nicholas School Appoints School Advisory Board
Jersey City, NJ – St. Nicholas School located in the Heights of Jersey City is looking to the future with the appointment of a School Advisory Board. The Archdiocese of Newark’s new model for Catholic schools is a ‘call to the laity’ which will engage and empower parents and lay constituents to have a greater voice in the future of their schools. The Advisory Board will assist the principal in the development of policy in the areas of finance, facilities, marketing, development, and strategic planning.
The Principal at the school, Mrs. Bernadette Miglin recently stated, “This is a wonderful and exciting time to join the St. Nicholas School community as we strengthen community involvement in providing an outstanding academic and spiritual environment for student learning and development”. According to Louis Scarpa, newly appointed board member, “St. Nicholas School fulfills a vital need in Jersey City as it continues to offer a superior education, focused on the development of the whole person”.
Suresh Kashyap has offered his talents “To help St. Nicholas School be a pioneer for elementary education in Jersey City and help students be better prepared for the future that is being transformed by technology”. Other members of the board include: Father Bruce Harger, Mr. John Trigo, Mr. Gene O'Connell, Mr. Ivan Freire, and Mr. Michael Bowser.
Founded by the Sisters of Christian Charity in 1886, the St. Nicholas School community is proud of their very strong legacy of excellence in academics and commitment to serving others. While standardized test scores are not the primary focus of the curriculum, St. Nicholas’ mean scores on the 2015 Terra Nova assessment were well above the national mean. Many student scores ranked in the top quarter of the national percentile scale.
In addition to a rigorous and challenging academic curriculum, the students of St. Nicholas School are involved in many extra-curricular activities including the National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, St. Nicholas School Choir, Hudson County Spelling Bee, Forensics Tournament, Science Fair, Reading Fair, Video Game Club, Marist Academic Olympics, Marist Math Olympics, and the First in Math Program. The school scored 6th in the nation and 1st in NJ for the 2012-2013 school year in this math program. The school also provides opportunities for co-curricular activities such as girls’ volleyball, girls and boys basketball, bowling, as well as fall and spring track activities.
St. Nicholas School is currently registering students in Grades PreK3-8. Please visit the website at www.snsjc.org or call the school for additional information at 201-659-5948.
